JAWS: Bull Sharks Spotted in Navasink River

Sharks have been reported in the Navesink River, according to the Rumson Police Department. The police stated that sharks, most likely bull sharks, were seen in the area of Navesink Avenue in Rumson.

So, with sharks in the water, many people are asking, is it safe to swim? Yes it is, according to Marine Scientist Jessica Starts, as reported by 94.3 The Point:

“I wouldn’t be afraid to be in the water right now,” says Marine Scientist Jessica Starts. “I would kind of find it a lucky occurrence if I get to see one that close if it was fishing or somewhere out there. Just take precautions, don’t flail around like an injured animal when you’re out there if you
do happen to see something. Take your time to get out. Just take precautions, but take it as a privilege you got to see something like that.”

It is now thought that a bull shark, and not a great white shark, was responsible for the 1916 shark attacks that killed two swimmers in Matawan Creek.

It is now thought that a bull shark, and not a great white shark, was responsible for the 1916 shark attacks that killed two swimmers in Matawan Creek. According to the National Geographic Society, “Some experts are suggesting that the great white may not in fact be responsible for many of the attacks pinned on the species. These people say the real culprit behind many of the reported incidents—including the famous 1916 shark attacks in New Jersey that may have served as inspiration for Jaws—may be the lesser known bull shark.”
